Why this project?Project rationale,

Minnagan

In Benin, more than 70% of the population continues to use traditional medicine for their primary health care needs. Despite this state of affairs, the country has not yet succeeded in exploiting this endogenous knowledge by developing standardised phytomedicines as evidence-based alternatives or as complementary products to so-called modern medicines. One of the main reasons for the low availability of standardised and qualified herbal medicines is related to the lack of rigour in the development process of herbal medicine, both from a scientific and technological point of view. This is due to the lack of real experts in the field of phytomedicine and phytopharmacy, the absence of a technical research platform for the discovery of drugs based on natural substances; and the low level of collaboration among African countries themselves and with specialists from developed countries. The proposed MINNAGAN project contributes significantly to the modernization of the traditional Beninese medicine sector in order to implement actions useful for the development and integration of phytomedicines into health policy in Benin.

Widespread Use of Traditional Medicine

  • More than 70% of the Beninese population continues to rely on traditional medicine for their primary healthcare needs.

Lack of Scientific and Technological Rigor

  • One major obstacle to the availability of qualified herbal medicines is the lack of rigor in the scientific and technological development process.

Underutilization of Endogenous Knowledge

  • Benin has not yet succeeded in leveraging this knowledge to develop standardized phytomedicines as evidence-based alternatives.

Low Collaboration and Lack of Expertise

  • The absence of experts in phytomedicine and the low level of collaboration between African countries and specialists from developed nations hinder the progress of phytomedicine development

What overall benefits will this project bring to the community/society? Overall objective

The main objective of our project is to strengthen Beninese higher education to improve research and research-based teaching that enables traditional medicine resources to make an effective and sustainable contribution to the health care of the population, inducing a paradigm shift towards an evidence-based use of standardized methods and well-formulated phytomedicines.
